What Turn-Mill Machining Combines

Turn-mill Compound machining coordinates lathe operations with driven-tool machining. It is useful when a rotary part also needs flats, slots, cross holes, threads or other milled features.

ONE COORDINATED ROUTE

Mixed Features, Fewer Transfers

The process can reduce movement between separate machines. This helps preserve relationships between features and simplifies work-in-process control.

Turning and facing Milling and slotting Drilling and boring Internal and external threads

Projects may also combine CNC turning services met CNC milling services when separate operations are more practical.

Part Selection

When One Setup Makes Sense

Turn-mill machining delivers the most value when rotational and milled features share critical datums or would otherwise require several transfers.

BEST-FIT GEOMETRY

Parts With Combined Features

Shafts, couplings, sleeves, bushings and valve components
Flats, slots or holes positioned around a turned diameter
Front, side and end features tied to a common datum
Parts that are difficult to re-clamp without losing alignment
PROJECT VALUE

Why Buyers Choose Turn-Mill

Fewer setups and less work-in-process movement
Better control of relationships between turned and milled features
A shorter and easier-to-manage production route
Repeatable processing for prototypes and recurring orders

Machining Scope

Turn-Mill Machining Capabilities

Our engineering team selects the route from the part geometry, material, tolerance, batch size and inspection requirements.

01

Outside and Inside Turning

Diameters, faces, shoulders, tapers, grooves and internal bores for rotational features.

02

Milled Features

Flats, keyways, pockets, slots and local profiles added to turned components.

03

Axial and Radial Holes

Drilled, bored, reamed or tapped features positioned from the relevant part datums.

04

Threads and Grooves

Internal or external threads, reliefs and grooves specified by the engineering drawing.

05

Multi-Face Features

Repeated or indexed features around the component when machine access allows.

06

Secundaire bewerkingen

Deburring, cleaning, inspection and approved finishing are coordinated after machining.

Maximum size, achievable tolerance and process sequence are confirmed after reviewing the drawing, material, feature access and inspection plan.

DFM Guidance for Turn-Mill Parts

Clear drawings help engineering choose a stable datum strategy, practical tool access and an inspection method that matches the functional requirement.

DatumsIdentify the functional datum and relationships between turned and milled features.
Tool accessProvide clearance around deep slots, cross holes, internal features and small corner radii.
DiscussiesState the thread standard, size, class, depth and any runout or relief requirement.
EdgesMark critical edge breaks and areas where cross-hole burrs must be removed.
TolerantiesApply tight tolerances only to functional features and define the required inspection basis.
AfwerkingSpecify coating, heat treatment and protected dimensions before the process route is released.

Turn-Mill Machining FAQ

Short answers to quotation and production questions not covered in the main service sections.

Do I need both a 3D model and a 2D drawing?

A 3D model defines geometry, while a 2D drawing communicates tolerances, datums, threads, finishes and inspection notes. Supplying both gives the clearest RFQ package.

How are mixed turned and milled features inspected?

The inspection method follows the drawing and datum scheme. CMM, height, vision, micrometer, caliper or gauge inspection may be used according to feature type.

Can heat treatment or surface finishing be included?

Yes. Approved heat treatment and surface finishing can be coordinated after reviewing the material, protected dimensions, tolerance impact and cosmetic requirements.

What usually drives turn-mill machining cost?

Material, stock size, feature access, tooling, cycle time, tolerance, inspection, quantity and finishing all affect price. A complete drawing package improves quotation accuracy.

When are separate turning and milling operations more economical?

Separate operations may suit simple parts, large components, low-access features or jobs that match available equipment better. Weldo selects the route after DFM review.
