Technical Questions Before Production
Should carbon steel be heat-treated before or after machining?
Stress relief or normalizing is completed before precision machining when stability is required. Final hardening normally follows rough machining, with grinding or finish machining reserved for critical dimensions.
How is heat-treatment distortion controlled?
Use stable stock, balanced machining allowances, stress relief, controlled loading and a suitable quench route. Critical features are left with finishing allowance and verified after treatment.
What is the difference between 1018 and 1045 steel?
1018 machines and welds easily and is suited to general parts. 1045 contains more carbon, providing higher strength and hardenability for shafts, gears and wear-loaded components.
Can hardened steel be CNC machined?
Yes. Hardened steel is machined with rigid setups, suitable carbide or ceramic tooling, controlled heat and reduced cutting loads. Grinding or EDM is selected when hardness or geometry limits conventional cutting.
What requires close attention when milling and turning steel?
Confirm the grade and hardness, use rigid workholding and suitable coated tools, control cutting speed and coolant, and monitor tool wear, cutting heat and chip evacuation. Allowance for later heat treatment must be included before final sizing.
Which finish provides the best corrosion protection for carbon steel?
Zinc plating is a cost-effective choice for general corrosion protection. Nickel plating or a specified coating system is selected when wear, appearance or more demanding service conditions are involved.
