6061 aluminum alloy is a commonly used aluminum alloy material with magnesium and silicon as the main alloying elements (forming the Mg₂Si phase). It has excellent properties such as light weight, high strength, and corrosion resistance. It has a face-centered cubic structure and certain plasticity. Its Al 6061 density is moderate, allowing it to maintain strength while also offering good weight advantages. By adding elements such as manganese, chromium, copper, and zinc, its performance can be further optimized, and its overall mechanical properties can be improved through aging treatment. Therefore, it is widely used in Обработка на станках с ЧПУ, plates, and various custom structural parts.

What is the density of Al 6061?
The commonly accepted market density of Al 6061 is 2.7 g/cm³, which is 2700 kg/m³. In American engineering materials, the density of Al 6061 is approximately 0.0975 lb/in³ after conversion. Understanding the density of 6061 aluminum alloy plays an important role in cost control, performance evaluation, and application in components. It is widely used in aerospace components and professional racing fields due to its good strength and lightweight characteristics, which help reduce fuel consumption and improve acceleration performance.
How is the density of 6061 aluminum alloy determined
To measure density, a standard solid 6061 aluminum ingot is placed into a sufficient amount of water. By calculating the difference in water level before and after immersion, the volume difference is obtained, which is the volume of the 6061 ingot. Then, dividing the mass of the ingot by this volume difference gives a density of 2.7 g/cm³. This method is also known as Archimedes’ principle.
Comparison of densities of 6061 aluminum alloy under different heat treatments
6061 aluminum alloy has four common heat treatment conditions: 6061-O, 6061-T4, 6061-T6, and 6061-T651.
Since 6061-O aluminum alloy has not undergone strengthening treatment, its density does not differ from the theoretical value, which is 2.7 g/cm³.
T4 refers to material that has undergone solution treatment (heated to about 535°C) and then naturally cooled at room temperature. Although alloying elements begin to form a solid solution, the precipitation of strengthening phases is relatively slow and dispersed. Therefore, its density remains relatively stable, with fluctuations usually within ±0.5% of the theoretical value. The density of 6061-T4 is approximately 2.70 g/cm³.
T6 and T651 are both heated to about 535°C and then water quenched. T6 is aged at approximately 160°C for 8–18 hours, while T651 undergoes cold stretching after quenching and is then aged at about 165°C. Therefore, 6061-T651 has lower internal stress than T6, reducing the risk of warping deformation during machining, but it comes at a higher material cost. The density of 6061-T6 is approximately 2.71–2.72 g/cm³, and the density of 6061-T651 is approximately 2.72–2.75 g/cm³.
How strong is 6061 aluminum alloy
Although the density of Al 6061 is relatively low at only 2.7 g/cm³, after heat treatment, some grades (such as T6) can achieve a yield strength of over 310 MPa. In comparison, ordinary carbon steel has a yield strength of about 270–420 MPa but a density of 7.85 g/cm³. For the same volume, carbon steel is nearly three times heavier than aluminum alloy. This shows that 6061 aluminum alloy not only has low density but can also approach the strength performance of steel. If you want to reduce component weight while maintaining a certain level of strength, 6061 aluminum alloy is a good choice.
